League: Southern League

History: For the briefest of time, Wilmington, North Carolina was home to a Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners going by the name of the Port City Roosters. The Roosters played in the Southern League for two seasons in 1995 and 1996. The Mariners sent players like Raúl Ibañez, Jose Cruz Jr., and Jason Varitek through Wilmington on their way to the Majors. The Roosters’ stay in Wilmington was always intended to be temporary, but the actual plans for the team never truly came to fruition and in 1997 the team was sold and relocated to Mobile, Alabama where they became the Mobile BayBears.
